I spent a week in the DR in spring of 2011 for my capstone class on Social Entrepreneurship in the developing world. We partnered with Sister Island Project (Proyecto Isla Hermana) for our housing, meals and home base in Cruz Verde, a rural village. We conducted poverty assessment (in 3-4 languages!) in the nearby Mata los Indios, and then handed that information to Esperanza International, a Micro-Finance Institution in Haiti and the DR.
May-June in 2011 I spent four weeks in the DR again, mostly in Santo Domingo, La Romana and back in Mata/Cruz Verde. I went again with NU’s Social Enterprise Institute, this time as a team leader, and we had the same partners. We assisted Esperanza with field research and analysis of retention and repayment rates of Haitian borrowers.
You can find my posts on the DR here.
