Greece

I spent 3 months of the fall of 2011 in Thessaloniki, Greece, as an International Student Advisor with the program N.U.in.  You can read more about the position in the announcement post here.  Greece was one of my top choices due to its financial situation, foreign language, geographic location and history.  For years, like most Americans, I’ve studied the philosophy, history, plays, literature and mythology of Greece.  I loved taking on the Greek language (over 4,000 years old!) and getting involved with the Global Experience class and accompanying Service Learning, both of which were odious to most of my students.

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece, after Athens.  The students went to ACT (American College of Thessaloniki), which is where I took Greek 101 (not for credit) and we all stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel.  If you have any questions about living in Thess, working for N.U.in or what have you, feel free to email me at harrington[dot]delia[at]gmail[dot]come.

While abroad, I traveled to Halkidiki, Vergina, Mt. Olympus, Istanbul, Berlin, and Cairo.  This trip was radically different in that my primary (and let’s face it, only) focus was work.  I was with 139 college freshmen who ranged in age from 17 to 19.  I lived with them, graded them, answered questions, caught puke in a plastic bag and came to love (almost) every last bugger.  They were a great group and made the experience a lot of fun, and I can’t imagine going back to NU without them!

Feel free to post any questions (or suggestions!) in the comment box below.
